Hiked 1 hour+ with a toddler who didn't want to hike. We used this stop to stretch our legs out on a day of lots of driving. Trails well maintained. We didn't make it to the beach so if you don't go to the beach, there isn't much to write home about for the wooded part of the hike IMO.

The highlight for my kiddo was seeing horses arrive at the trail head at the same time as us.

Wanted to avoid the heat and the haze as much as possible with my husky. So I chose to hike here. Beautiful forest especially the trail that heads to the beach. Seeing the spit is a must if you come here imo (assuming tide levels are low enough). Great view of protection island. Way too hazy to see Mount Baker. Could see the San Juan’s. I discovered a new creature I had never seen before during low tide which is the Gumboot Chiton (look at photos). Well maintained easy trails that are perfect for mountain biking. Not too populated. I had the spit all to myself. Worth a visit if the mountains aren’t a great option that day.

Lovely weather, very calm on the beach. The road is fine all the way in, it's paved with no potholes. The toilet was in good condition, and the picnic tables also. Footing was solid with perhaps two or three small muddy patches in 9 miles. Expect some single spider web lines across the narrower trail sections, but I didn't meet any actual spiders. The seaweed on the beach can be deeper in spots than you'd expect so just take a little care there. Overall this park is lovely - it's well signed, mostly it's a gentle grade, and if you don't like the narrow trails you can stick to the roads (which at this time of year are more like wide trails, none of the interior roads are paved). You'll see a few people but mostly just at the trailhead or on the beach itself.

Just a quick 1.75 miles down to the beach after parking at the Aerospace Rd. gate. Went with my kids who happened to be home for a visit. Good signage along the trail. Take the Fireweed Rd. trail to the Beach Trail and you'll come out on a rocky beach looking out at Protection Island.

Why have I never hiked here before? Such a lovely system of trail. Some mud in a few places and a tree down right before the beach (room to walk under but probably not for horses). Otherwise trail in good condition.
Right now the rhodies are glorious and there are so many mushrooms! The ferns and madronas are also lovely.
Watch your step! There are a lot of well camouflaged newts on the trail. And a few baby toads.
Will definitely be back. Plenty of choose your own adventure routes to enjoy and we only covered about half of them.
