Edmonds Marsh — Friday, Jun. 7, 2024

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area
Edmonds Marsh by Linnea Johnson

I’ve found that marshes, without fail, are magical places — and Edmonds Marsh is no exception. This small pocket of brackish wetland is teeming with life. I’ve lived in Edmonds for a year now and this was my first visit to Edmonds Marsh. As soon as I stepped onto the boardwalk, an osprey soared overhead then landed in some shallow water. A family of mallards with 4 or 5 teenaged ducklings puttered near the cattails and plump killdeer rested on a tiny island (which was later overtaken by the mallards, then a great blue heron).

The 0.2m boardwalk is well maintained and has two stops with interpretive signs. Unfortunately, someone scratched out the lenses on the viewer at the end (why??) but it’s still a lovely place to stop. I recommend bringing binoculars.

Thanks to a friendly fellow birder, I learned that the trail is not just the boardwalk. A paved trail extends along the full side of the trail bordering the athletic center, with more interpretive signs and different views of the marsh.

Both the boardwalk and paved trail appear fully wheelchair friendly.

What a hidden gem! This is a Trail Next Door no birder will want to miss.
