Hiking South Tiger Traverse

Start from the southern trailhead of the Tiger Mountain Trail (TMT), and follow the TMT. At 1.1 miles, a sign directs horse riders to turn right onto the "Horse Bypass Trail," while the hiker-only trail continues straight ahead. In another 0.4 miles, the foot and horse trails rejoin at Hobert Gap.

The South Tiger Traverse Trail starts at this five-way intersection. A sign directs you to go west. Quickly turn right and hike up a gravel road. Soon, you will see a box of a generator and then walk under powerlines. On a clear day, you can see the Olympic Mountains from here. The South Tiger Powerline Trail starts here and goes east to connect with the TMT. Continue the road walk and you will see a narrow trail branching to the right. Take the trail into the forest.

In summer, this area is brushy. In 0.2 miles, you will cross a small stream on a sturdy bridge. The sign indicates that the Back Country Horsemen of Washington donated this bridge in May 2010. In another 0.2 miles, you will pop out of the forest and the trail crosses a logging road.

Continue following the trail and you will see a trail sign on your right just after a sharp left turn. This is the start of the South Tiger Summit Trail. In about 0.1 miles, be alert for a large stump on the right — known for its signature "smile" — a remnant from logging a century ago.

In another 0.3 mile, the trail crosses a logging road again. Continue following the trail and you will rejoin the road in another 0.2 mile. After walking downhill for about 0.4 miles, the trail ends at the junction with the TMT.

Extend your hike

Option 1: From the junction with the South Tiger Summit Trail, head to the two summits of South Tiger Mountain — a short side trip to sweeping southwest vistas.

Option 2: Consider a loop hike all the way around South Tiger Mountain, returning to Hobart Gap via the TMT.

Getting There

This trail starts on the South Tiger Traverse Trail. One of the nearest trailheads to this point is the southern trailhead of the Tiger Mountain Trail (TMT).

From I-90 in Issaquah, take exit 17 and head south on Front Street through the town. At the south end of town, Front Street becomes Issaquah-Hobart Road. At 8.5 miles from I-90, just before the Highway 18 overpass, turn left onto Tiger Mountain Road SE. Proceed 0.2 miles and look for places to park along the left shoulder of the road. There is no designated trailhead parking lot.

You may find it easier to drive another 0.15 miles to SE 175th Place, make a U-turn and come back to park on the shoulder. The shoulder is highway right-of-way, and you do not have to display a Discover Pass to park there. There are no facilities. Your hike begins on the TMT, a few feet south of the sign that reads "School Bus Stop Ahead."
