This short section of the PCT heads south out of Snoqualmie Pass and to Windy Pass, where it is possible to access Mount Catherine, or do a longer loop before heading back towards the trailhead at Snoqualmie Pass.

Following an abandoned trail, Howson Creek provides an enjoyable hike in light forest. The trail is steep and the tread is narrow, but it offers progressively better views above 4000 feet, north toward Thorp Mountain and the Snoqualmie Peaks, especially from West Sasse Peak.

The Granite Mountain trail is one of Washington's most popular in summer. But in winter, the route crosses an avalanche chute and is extremely dangerous when snow is present.

This steep trail goes from Forest Road 4517-117 to the Cle Elum Ridge Trail. Hike up switchbacks beneath a forest of ponderosa pine and fir trees to reach some spectacular views of the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest. Be sure to bring waterproof shoes, as the creek comes over the trail in places.

Take a rugged trek through creek canyons, down a four-wheeling road, over a remote pass, and back down through a multi-use trail to complete a challenging loop hike. With many miles of trails that are being improved by King County Parks, Ames Lake Forest is a good option for anyone looking to get away from crowds at Tolt-MacDonald. Keep in mind that this is a watershed though, and be certain to keep Leave No Trace principles in mind in this sensitive area.

If you’re in need of a quick leg stretch while traveling over the pass, the trail to Alpine Falls may be just the place. The trail is very short and features a powerful waterfall where the Tye River flows over giant granite boulders.
