My small group of friends did a Halloween Hike to Monte Cristo and we had a blast! The Fall foliage is outstanding right now with Vine Maple blasting color. The history of the site is very interesting and worth looking into before your hike. We crossed the river just before the log crossing. The water is low enough to just step on rocks and keep mostly dry. I'd still recommend waterproof boots. It would be helpful for newbie hikers to download a copy of an AllTrails map or some digital guide to help pick up the trail on the other side of the river. An experienced hiker will see the faint pathways leading to the road. The rest of the way is easy going, shaded and colorful. There is a privy at the Barlow Pass TH parking lot and a backcountry toilet behind the red houses in the town site. Happy Trails!
