Trip Report

Cascade Pass and Sahale Arm, Eldorado Peak, Hidden Lake Lookout, Boston Basin & Lookout Mountain Lookout — Sunday, Apr. 23, 2023

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

This mostly road status update.

The 180,000lbs boulder at mile post 6.5 was recently removed (by the county, I assume) and all "road closed" barricades are gone. The sign at mile point 1 still says "road closed ahead at mile 6". My guess is removal of that sign is a different work order and will be done eventually.

Point is, the road is open.

What I don't know is where the snow starts, and how far up blowdowns have been removed.

The road to Lookout mtn trailhead (mile post 7.5-ish) is clear and suitable for all vehicles.

I'd bet a pretty penny that the road is at least drivable to the end of the pavement, past milepoint 10 and the turn-off to Hidden Lake Lookout trail.

If you go there, post additional info in the comments.

Did you find this trip report helpful?

Drove up to the 17 mile marker before hitting downed trees that have not been removed. Walked the rest of the way through occassional snow patch and down trees to the Eldorado parking area. 04/22/23

How many blowdowns are there before El Dorardo parking? I'm thinking of heading up there this weekend and will bring my chainsaw. Is it realistic for one person to clear the road or are there too many blowdowns? I'll leave my saw at home and bike the road instead if its too bad.

Blowdowns

There are approximately a half a dozen or so blowdowns along the road. Mostly smaller diameter trees but a couple of larger ones. A medium chainsaw should do the trick.

Let me clarify. A half dozen or so areas where there are multiple blowdowns. It seems when the big boys come down, they bring some friends with them.

Thank you for updating. If I understand correctly, it is possible to drive up to about 3 miles from Eldorado parking area?

Yes. Though I wouldn't be surprised if it's logged out all the way to the Eldorado trailhead by now. I don't know what day Anton plans to go, so after he's been there the road will likely be clear.

The biggest problem this weekend might be the river crossing right at the start.

Did anyone go to Eldorado and has an update on the road status? Still only open to mile point 17 or all the way to the Eldorado trailhead?
How's the river crossing?

I spoke with two bikers when I was up there on Saturday. They said they had biked the whole road up to the gate and it was clear of trees. I didn't see it myself so it is second hand information.
