Goat Peak Lookout is currently a fantastic way to see Larches both from a distance and up close. The drive is fairly long, but the road is generally in good condition with a few rocks you will want to avoid if you have a vehicle that is low to the ground. As a warning to fellow hikers follow the written directions not your GPS, you want to turn onto FS 52 from Goat Creek Road, there is a sign for the snow park at the turn, so it should be easy to spot, from there everything is very well labeled and it is easy to find your way to the trail head.
The hike itself is incredible, but we highly recommend either crampons or poles (or both) for the trip higher up. The path is already covered with slick snow and could be difficult with just boots. Dress warm and be prepared for some fantastic scenery (even on a heavily overcast day). The Larches are the stars of the journey, and we were lucky enough to see them in multiple lighting conditions as we made the trip.
