Greenwater and Echo Lakes — Monday, May. 25, 2015

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410
Downed bridge
Got a late start on the last day of Memorial Day weekend. Started hiking just past 4 pm, which worked out great, because aside from a few people returning, I had this beautiful trail all to myself. Absolutely gorgeous! The range being so close made the first mile or so a little unnerving, but the gunshot sounds quickly faded away (maybe aided by the fact I got there so late). I made it to at least the first two lakes - upper and lower Greenwater lakes - and maybe 3- though I'm not sure if the one "lake" was maybe just a wide spot at the river. The trail would be a good one for newer hiker or just getting in shape, because it features lots of pleasantly rolling hills; however, even experienced hikers would enjoy this hike, which features fun footbridges, babbling brooks, roaring rivers, and waterfalls around practically every turn. Unfortunately for me, my late start + 3 canine companions made the downed bridge a complete deal breaker - I had to turn back because I couldn't risk fording or falling off a log on a solo hike near nightfall, especially with dogs who were depending on me. That said, I can't wait to go back and go all the way to Echo Lake - guess it might be worthwhile to trek there early after all. Hopefully I'll get the chance on a weekend soon!
