Trip Report
Chelan Lakeshore Trail, Fish Creek & Horton Butte — Saturday, May. 22, 2010
Central Cascades > Entiat Mountains/Lake Chelan
22-24 May 2010
We finally got around hiking this trail. Last time we tried the shoreline was burning and the trail was then closed for a year (or two?).
The weather forecast on the coast looked a bit dismal, the East slopes of Cascades looked more promising. In the end the weather turned out to be good, very little rain overnight, mostly cloudy with periods of sun.
On Saturday we took the Lady of the Lake to Prince Creek, then hiked to Moore Point. Sunday was dedicated to inspecting the burned forest in Fish Creek drainage and lying on the beach at Moore Point. On Monday we hiked the rest of the trail to Stehekin and took the boat back to Chelan, a four hour undertaking.
Trail conditions:
Chelan Lakeshore Trail (#1247): minor blowdown north of Moore Point, Meadow Creek had to be forded, all other creek crossing were OK
Fish Creek (#1248): Hiked section between Moore Point and fork to Horton Butte, minor blowdown, otherwise trail is in great shape
Horton Butte (#1250.1): Hiked to Round Lake, lots of minor blowdown, the fork to Round Lake is basically obliterated by falldown, saw snowline sitting around 5600 ft, Fish creek can be crossed on a large log (someone started cutting off the top to make it into a log bridge but the work was unfinished, the middle section is not done).
