Trip Report

Oyster Dome, Lily Lake Loop — Wednesday, May. 6, 2026

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Lily lake completely socked in
Today was a hike that we knew we might not get any views! ...and we did not :(

The road to the Samish Overlook parking lot has some potholes. My Tesla did okay, just that I had to drive slow. We arrived at the parking lot at 10am and there were about 4 cars already. This trail gets busy on the weekends so arrive early or hike on the weekdays. There's a restroom at the trailhead. You need a Discover Pass to hike this trail.

There are several approaches to Oyster Dome. Download the map before you go. We took the Larry Reed trail as we wanted to go to Lily Lake and the North Butte before going to Oyster Dome. The trail is really well maintained. We did not get a clear view at the lake. It was completely socked in.There’s a nice fire pit and two benches at the lake. There are campgrounds near Lily lake. We decided to skip North Butte and head back to  Oyster Dome. No views at the summit. We just spent a few minutes at the summit.

While descending we took the Samish Overlook route back to the trailhead. If we had chosen to do this route to Oyster Dome, the trail is a very constant uphill climb with some very steep sections. There is one creek to cross.

I definitely plan to come back to see the amazing views from Oyster Dome.

My Garmin recorded 7.7 miles and 1637 ft of elevation gain.
No views at the summit, only smiles :)
What we expected and what we got :p , still a beautiful hike!
