Another day, another fun roam through public/state lands. My “goal” for the day was a peak with 1000’ of prominence, my ploy to my partner/wife was that it had a name so cute that we couldn’t possibly pass it by.
This portion of the expansive Methow State Wildlife Area is steep and dry. Tucked between a sport fishing lake and the popular Pipestone Canyon. Being careful to park appropriately we walked a bit before turning into the gated Fuzzy Canyon.
The trail is a little used 4WD track that climbs quite steeply at times. Bitter Brush is fabulously in bloom right now, so fragrant and surely a favorite desert color. Numerous other flowers, about thirty in total, are in bloom. The ridgeline by far was the most prolific.
Views along the ridgeline were no less dramatic with the snowy Cascades, and vibrant green shrubbe-steppe of the nearby hills.
A new-to-us bird, the Lewis Woodpecker gave us ample viewing opportunity for a definitive ID. Isn’t it curious where we find pleasure as life changes?
