Julia and I organized a ranger-led snowshoe walk at Mt Rainier National Park on Sunday 3/8 for a private group of 20. We kept a close eye on the forecast all the way up until we had to head down to the park. We were expecting strong winds and lots of precipitation (a mix of rain and snow). We weren't sure if the road was even going to be open given the forecast, but we lucked out! Conditions up at Paradise were blustery and cold, as expected - luckily we all brought lots of layers and waterproof everything.
Ranger Darby led a fantastic interpretive walk along the Nisqually Vista Loop (winter route). We learned all about how to be prepared for winter conditions and adaptations that trees and wildlife have to make to survive harsh winter conditions. This trip was also supported by an awesome VIP (Volunteer In Parks), WTA's very own Catherine V!!! She did a great job keeping us all safe and on track :)
The trail itself is well marked. It had a different starting point from previous years, but NPS staff have clearly marked the start of the trail as well as the length of the trail with orange flagging poles. Snow depth was very low compared to the yearly average, but we're anticipating a whole lot of snow this week which the area desperately needs!
*snow chains are required to enter the park during the winter season*
