We saw an alternative route on google map that bypasses the boulder area and took it on the way down. It wanders through the forest. Paths were a bit faint over there, some big down trees, a bigger patch of snow but it was very thick and firm.
I also did not see any signs about when the upper lot gate would be closed, but it was still open at 5PM when we left.
Other than that the hike was great. Weather was perfect. We saw 2 pikas bathing the sun too.

That's an old trail from decades ago that was blocked off due to erosion through the trees.
