Trip Report

Kestner Homestead - Maple Glade — Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast
First look at the Kestner Homestead from the drive-in parking lot.

We visited the Kestner Homestead and Maple Glade for a First Day Hike of 2025. There was some flowing water over the asphalt road on the drive in but otherwise there were no obstacles on the road or trail.

The sky was cloudy but bright. Recent, light snowfall was apparent on the hills above the parking lot.

The first bridge at the Maple Glade trail across from the Ranger station has seen some recent storm damage (see photos). One of the side rails mid-span was been demolished and there was a hole in the bridge deck. These hazards are clearly marked with orange cones to serve as a warning to hikers. They are easily passable.

We had the trail and Homestead mostly to ourselves the entire day. There is a large covered area with a new roof and several picnic tables set out of the weather. Be prepared for animal droppings on the table surfaces.
