Trip Report

Huckleberry Creek — Thursday, Jul. 25, 2024

Mount Rainier Area > Chinook Pass - Hwy 410

Our group of 11 senior women arrived later in the morning after going up to Suntop Lookout first.  Some of us had tried this hike in May only to encounter too many obstacles of massive downed trees to go more than 2.5 miles in. Thanks to the hard work of the Forest Service trail workers clearing the first mile and then the NPS trail workers clearing  downed monster trees, (diameters of 5 feet across or more) and other downed branches etc.  the trail is now just beautiful for a quiet walk through pristine old growth forest following the  creek.  Our group were the only hikers on it that day.  We didn't go more than 3 miles in this time but will return for an extended hike another time.  No bugs today!  This is a nice pleasant easy trail at least for the first few miles until it starts to climb up towards Sunrise.

Road 73 from 410 to the trailhead is dusty with some large potholes it is suitable for cars, just take it slow.
