I hiked to Crystal Peak then when I got back down to the trail junction, decided to get my gas money's worth by hiking up the other fork to Crystal Lakes. I continued on the trail past upper Crystal Lake where I encountered some mud, then some intermittent snow on the trail. The snow was soft by then (noon) and not hard to cross. I continued to the PCT then to Sourdough Gap, where I turned around. The biggest snowfield was just before Sourdough. It looked intimidating but was soft enough (about 1PM) that I didn't feel it was too risky to cross with my poles.
Bugs were buzzing around but were no problem for me; I never had to put on my repellent (but bugs generally seem to leave me alone more than some other people).
This trail was amazingly smooth, both to the peak and lakes. It's hard to find an easier trail to walk to a mountaintop. The only time it's more of a "normal" rough trail is above upper Crystal Lake.
