Gothic Basin — Sunday, Aug. 15, 2021

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Had a lovely but challenging hike to gothic basin. It took us 3.5 hours from the trailhead to Foggy Lake and 2.75 hours down. We got to the trailhead at 10:20 AM and had to park on the side of the road not far from the trailhead. This is a difficult hike, especially in the heat! We were expecting a tough day, and found it to be a killer workout - as folks have said before, especially the last 2 miles. The lakes are beautiful, my husband jumped in Foggy Lake to cool off after lunch. We also bought a large cookie at the Verlot general store on the drive to enjoy at the top :)

As to water, I'd recommend 3 liters per person (or bring a water filter, lots of places to refill). Trekking poles were great to have on the downhills, and we used a downloaded map (AllTrails) to get from Gothic Lake to Foggy Lake - although there are cairns marking the way, the map just makes it easier. Also - a nearly bug free hike in August? Yes it exists! Although there were a few bugs we returned to the car with 0 bug bikes.
