Hiking Salt Creek

This trail follows a gentle grade through open forest, some of which is an old burn scar. Huckleberry bushes can be found along the trail, along with a couple of peekaboo views of a grassy meadow and Mount Adams.

The first mile of the trail follows a wide dirt path (a former road bed) up a gentle grade through open forest. Eventually, the trail narrows and goes along the hillside of Crofton Ridge. Roughly 1.5 miles in there is a view down to a large pond and meadow, and Stagman Ridge beyond. At around 2 miles, the trail steepens, rising to a local high point (not the ridge crest) at 3 miles. On clear days, watch for a glimpse of the shoulder of Mount Adams along this stretch.

The trail historically continues past this high point but is not maintained, and quickly disappears after descending the ridge.

Getting There

From Trout Lake, take Mt. Adams Road north to Forest Road 23. Follow Forest Road 23 for about 7.7 miles. Take a slight right onto Forest Road 8031 (unsigned). Stay right (do not go to Stagman Ridge), then turn left for the 8031-060 spur road.

From Randle, take Hwy 131 south for 1 mile, then take a left onto Cispus Rd, which becomes Forest Road 23. Follow this for 46 miles, then take a sharp left onto Forest Road 8031 (there is a sign indicating an unnamed road junction). Stay right (do not go to Stagman Ridge), then turn left for the 8031-060 spur road. Note that Forest Road 23 is closed in winters, and is unpaved for a 12-mile stretch over Babyshoe Pass.
