Hiking Roza Creek Road to Birdsong Tree

This short hike to the aptly named Birdsong Tree follows Roza Creek Road in the Wenas Wildlife Area. The trail is mostly exposed until you reach the Roza Creek bed, where the desert landscape becomes lush with cattails and birds greet you with their song.

In spring, you’ll be treated to many wildflowers and native plants such as balsamroot, phlox, bitterroot, lupine and Oregon grape. Aspen and willow trees can be found near the creek. While Birdsong Tree isn’t marked, look for a mounted wildlife camera.

As with any hike in this area, watch your step and be mindful of snakes in warmer months.

If you visit on a clear day, watch for views of Mount Adams on the drive out.

Extend your hike

Note: The Wenas Wildlife Area is used by hunters and target shooters during certain times of year. Be sure to check the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife site before you go for specific information.

Getting There

A high-clearance vehicle is required to drive all the way to the trailhead. Old Durr Road and Roza Creek Road become increasingly rutted and rough where the gravel road ends at the intersection of Durr Road and Roza Creek Road. There are a few turnouts where it’s possible to park and walk the remaining distance to the trailhead should you reach a point that exceeds your vehicle's limitations. Driving beyond the gravel when conditions are muddy is not recommended.

From Ellensburg, drive east on I-90. Take exit 110 for I-82 toward Yakima. After 25 miles, take exit 26 for WA-821 North toward Selah. Turn right onto WA-821 N and then quickly turn left onto WA-823 or Harrison Road. Go 2 miles and turn right on N Wenas Road. Go 5 miles and turn right on Sheep Company Road.

After 1.6 miles, you will reach the entrance to the Wenas Wildlife Area. You’ll see a parking area and information post on your left. Keep going straight. Here the road becomes Old Durr Road. (Fun fact: Old Durr Road is an old stagecoach route from Ellensburg to Yakima.)

Follow Old Durr Road for 2.5 miles where the road goes downhill and then curves sharply to the right. Soon after the curve, bear right past a couple of roads that head north, and continue straight for 2.5 miles on the extremely rutted track that is Roza Creek Road until you reach a gate.

Park here and pick up the trail on the other side of the gate by foot. There is no signage at the trailhead.
