Beware of: trail conditions

I thought I would get a workout today. I chose pyramid peak since previous trip reports had great pictures.

Couple of tips. When you arrive at the trail head there is some parking along the side of the road but if you go just a little further there is a nice parking lot and vault toilet on the lake side of the road.
The sign at the trailhead says 3.5 miles.  More like 3.8.
There is a big washout/slide right at 2 miles from the trail head. Someone has cut in a boot track across it so that helps. Lots of loose dirt and small rocks.  It is a long way across.  If you have any issues with exposure don’t do it.
Cross the slide?  Now it starts going uphill from there.
At 2.75 miles you attain the ridge. Nice respite from the uphill for awhile. The uphill treck resumes though and then you reach the top. A “cabin” is there and fantastic views of crescent lake.
Back to the car after 4 hours of hiking.
When I was driving back home on US101 on the opposite side of lake Crescent  you can see the huge slide area on the mountain which the trail crossed.
Say hi when you see me on the trail.

We arrived at the trailhead at 10:10 am on a sunny day. There was no other vehicles in the adjacent parking lot so we did something we never tried before. Hike an entire trial to a summit of a mountain in the buff! It was very liberating! After having lunch on the summit and taking photos for about an hour we headed down the trail - fully clothed. Saw no other hikers that day, just one cyclist biking the Spruce Rail Road Trail.

The trail is clear of snow. The avalanche chute section at mile 2.0 is passable. I wore hiking boots, had hiking poles, and did not look down or up - only focused on planting one foot in front of the other and moving slowly. The sections lasts a minute or two (feels longer). There is one boulder that sticks out which made me glad I am not extra wide and did not have a huge pack on. The view from the top is worth it. There are a few stream crossings and small slides but nothing worth reporting.

Pyramid Mountain:

Super nice trail, easy to read and steady grade. There are the 2 washouts around mile 2, but other than those spots, the trail is really well maintained. No snow at all. Only saw 3 other people on the trail. Fire lookout building was cool. The view of Lake Crescent and MSK was great from the peak.

Aurora Creek:

The parking for this is pretty small as mentioned by others. The trail starts out steeper than Pyramid right away. It's also a bit more rugged off the bat as well. Still easy to read and keep pace on. My legs were a bit beat from the Pyramid hike just before this. That and I might have a bit of a chest cold as I just wasn't feeling great today. Snow started at 3900ft. I was in trail runners, microspikes, gaiters and poles for all of the snow section. It was firm-ish, but also soft enough to break and slide regularly. I just took the last 500ft of gain nice and careful. The slope of the hill and the pooling of snow on the trail made for some precise foot placements. I considered tagging 4400 peak as the path up seemed reasonable at the junction of the Aurora Ridge and Creek trails. But I was feeling pretty tanked, so I returned following my footsteps. Challenging hike as the gain is real. With how shaded this is, this would be a great training hike for hot, sunny days. Good gains per mile, shade and a couple spots to grab extra water if you needed to.

This is a beautiful hike through dense woods. The views at the top are incredible and on a clear day you can see Canada (I think).

The hike starts on one side of the mountain and then switches to the other side towards the top.

As an added bonus, we got engaged at the top!
