Followed the trail to Boardman Lake. Tried going around the lake counterclockwise first and the clockwise, but quickly ended up in terrain that was a bit too steep and bushwhacky.

Trail Conditions. No obstacles, but plenty of roots and rocks.

Road Conditions. The last 2 miles past the junction with Pinnacle Lake had some rough spots, high-clearance and AWD seemed like a good idea. Narrow in places, but plenty of spots to pass. No trailhead facilities.

Highlights. Nice old-growth forest, wildflowers (lots of bunchberry, western lily-of-the-valley, coralroot orchids), and some birds (several red-breasted sapsuckers).

Bug Status. No biting bugs, but lots of tiny flies swarming on the east side of Boardman Lake (where the established campsites are).

Crowds. Encountered two parties on the trail. Plenty of parking.

I hiked up past Boardman Lake to Island Lake via the unofficial but easily passable trail. Island is a pretty lake but my main goal for the day was the 4027' peak (4044' per LiDAR) above informally called "Boardman Peak" due to its proximity to the lake. There is no trail beyond Island so I just headed up to the ridge through sometimes dense brush and continued to the summit from there. The ridge narrows in a couple spots but there is no scrambling or exposure involved. The top is a pile of boulders in the forest but a great viewpoint down to Boardman Lake from a rocky outcrop is a few hundred feet east.

The road to the trailhead gets pretty bad in places the last 1.5 miles. Any vehicle with less than medium clearance and good tires could have difficulties.

My GPS said 6.1 miles RT and 1651' of gain.

Road has many pot holes and a few sections of deep wash out and rocks. Just took it nice and slow.

Only one other car at the trailhead and never saw anyone on the trail. Trail is in good condition. Only one tree to step over.

Bugs were out on the trail but mostly around the lakes. Also, saw lots of small frogs on the trail.

Overall an easy short hike for a peaceful time at a beautiful lake.

Great shorts weather, but not a great trail to wear shorts above Boardman.  We recruited another hiking friend with four wheel drive but the road could be slowly navigated in a car with high clearance. A recent excellent report by Zaranth made this an easy choice today.

Trail past Lake Evan and to Boardman was well defined and went by quickly. As we approached Boardman we followed a trail to the right where the main trail switched back to the outlet log crossing.  The trail around the lake is easily followed though it climbs and drops as it moves past a couple of cliff bands.  At the Northwest corner is where it starts to climbs more steeply and becomes overgrown and muddy in spots. The trail crosses a meadow and then bends left at a waterfall.  Higher up you pass two pocket meadows and a pond then climb up a notch and descend to Island Lake. We spent about an hour there, scouting around for a way up Boardman Peak but eventually just settling for a quite siesta on an outcrop.

Fortified and I soaked in the amazing conditions and sunshine to Boardman Lake & Island Lake.

The road is decent up the first 3 miles to the junction.  The remaining 2 miles are much rougher.  Maybe a quarter mile past the junction, there is a rocky and deep washout.  Then at about 1mile past the junction, there is a bad rocky section with sharp rocks that protrude from the road bed.  4x4 and high clearance are very much appreciated and perhaps required.  Parking lot had about 10 cars in it when we arrived.

The trail to Boardman was in great shape and we head/saw several groups with young kids enjoying themselves at the usual beach : )

The trail to Island Lake has become much easier to follow over the years with two new work-arounds that really improve the whole route.

There were a couple little patches of snow left in the creek valley heading up and a small amount at Island Lake.  The Lake was mostly melted out but still had some ice over maybe a third of the lake.  We really enjoy this lovely little lake.
