Boardman Lake, Island Lake — Friday, Jun. 6, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Great shorts weather, but not a great trail to wear shorts above Boardman.  We recruited another hiking friend with four wheel drive but the road could be slowly navigated in a car with high clearance. A recent excellent report by Zaranth made this an easy choice today.

Trail past Lake Evan and to Boardman was well defined and went by quickly. As we approached Boardman we followed a trail to the right where the main trail switched back to the outlet log crossing.  The trail around the lake is easily followed though it climbs and drops as it moves past a couple of cliff bands.  At the Northwest corner is where it starts to climbs more steeply and becomes overgrown and muddy in spots. The trail crosses a meadow and then bends left at a waterfall.  Higher up you pass two pocket meadows and a pond then climb up a notch and descend to Island Lake. We spent about an hour there, scouting around for a way up Boardman Peak but eventually just settling for a quite siesta on an outcrop.
