What counts as a local trail

#LoveLocalTrails welcomes trip reports on trails that are either:

  1. In walking distance of your home or community
  2. Most often enjoyed by people who live in the immediate vicinity
  3. Managed by a city government

One lucky winner will receive this perfect picnic set!

Why trip reports on local trails matter

Trip reports help hikers like you to get outside, show where trail work is needed and help WTA advocate for trail funding. Reports enable  hikers like you to stay informed about current conditions so that you  know what to expect once you get to the trailhead.

Trip reports can also help land managers of local trails, like King County Parks and Spokane Parks and Recreation, get a better understanding of needs on certain trails. They can even help scientists understand a changing climate and the impacts it has on public health.

Why Trails Next Door?

It's no secret that we in Washington love our trails, but the winter months highlight just how important our local trails really are. They connect us with the mental health benefits of time in nature daily — and provide the perfect outdoor fix during the colder months when the mountains can be inaccessible for many.

That's why, this February, as part of our Trails Next Door campaign, we encourage hikers throughout Washington state to show their love for local trails through trip reports.

Please note all trip reports must be from trips which occurred during February 2025 to qualify.
