Trip Report

Mica Peak — Wednesday, Mar. 12, 2003

Eastern Washington > Spokane Area/Coeur d'Alene
Mica Peak is one of the most prominant peaks seen from the Spokane area. At 5241 feet, it is easily recognized as having a large USAF tracking dome atop. There is a well maintained gravel road meandering up the south face starting at approx. 2300 feet, however it is gated and the rather mundane walk is about 5 miles one way. This undocumented route is far more challenging and asthetically pleasing. Start at the Liberty Lake Co Park Trailhead to the Cedar Grove loop trail. Bear to the right at the equestrian trail and climb the north face by bearing right whenever possible at trail intersections. Avoid the posted scenic views as they are simply small loops that will bring you back to this trail. After approx. 2 miles the trails veres from the back side of the Cedar Grove trail up a sttep incline on a path that is best described as a deserted jeep trail. The peak can be seen from points along this route and trail selection is easy....take the one that goes up! Great view of Lake Couer d/ Alane, Lake Pod O reille and Mt Spokane from atop. There are several creek crossings along the way but with careful stepping you will stay dry. The Jeep trail can be rutted, but overall it's better than bushwhacking. There are some blowdowns that take a while to be cleared and since this is the north face you can expect heavy snow above 3000 feet through July. Total clinb is 3000 feet in about 5 miles. This little used route will become a favorite and is a quick escape from the city.
