Trip Report

Old Sauk River Trail — Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
After all the up and down hikes of this finally to an end coming season, we decided just to dawdle for a change. What better place than the Old Sauk River trail - a smooth, even forest trail. No fallen logs to climb, no rocks, no standing or running water, .3 miles one way amidst trees covered with mosses, lichens and liverworts, very much reminiscent of the Hoh Rain Forest with plenty of views of the green waters of Old Sauk. Drive through Darrington to the Mountain Loop Highway. The north entrance to the trail is .7 miles beyond the bridge over Clear Creek and Clear Creek Campground. This trip can easily be combined with a short drive further up the Mountain Loop Highway to climb down the few yards to see the North Fork Sauk Falls, as we did.
