Trip Report

Mount Adams South Climb — Tuesday, Jun. 22, 1999

South Cascades > Mount Adams Area
I had called the Mt. Adams hot line and was told the road was closed at the Wicky shelter. After signing in we headed up and found the road open further up. There was a big tree down 2 1/2 miles below Morrison Ceek camp. We started encountering snow About 1 1/2 miles below Morrison creek. LOTS of trees down on the road. We found the only snow free spot and spent the night at Morrison creek. The road to Cold springs is easy to follow but again LOTS of trees down. We started to find flags from there to timberline. The snow is still real deep but snow shoes were not needed. This was not a summit climb so we had a great lunch in hot clear weather at Timberline and watched the skiers and snow boarders fly off the mountain. Plan on an extra couple of miles of walking as the road is in real bad shape with the trees and snow and doesent look like its going to open higher any time soon. The walk is great though!
