The road in was rough with some deep potholes, mud, and rutting. I think a regular sedan would struggle to get up it. It took about 30 min from highway 2 to reach the trailhead. Arrived at the trailhead about 9:30 am with 4 cars already in the lot. The vault toilet is locked for the winter. Someone took a surface poop behind the toilet structure. Don’t be that person, plan ahead.
Trail is in good shape and snow free for the first part with some muddy patches. Patchy snow begins at about 3700 feet eventually turning to full snow coverage. There is a good boot pack and snowshoes were not needed. I didn’t feel that I needed micro spikes on the way up or down, but someone less sure of their footing may want traction for the descent.
We passed 3 pairs and a group of 3 on the way up. It took about 2.5 hours to reach the summit at a casual pace with a couple breaks. We had the summit to ourselves, so took a nice 30 minute lunch in the sun. On the way down, we passed 4 pairs and one solo hiker. It took about 1.5 hours to return to the car.
This was a great, not too strenuous hike. Keep in mind that all these conditions could change with any new precipitation. Know before you go!

Was up there last week and saw some cougar tracks between the first and second switch backs
