I haven't seen this noted in recent trip reports, so I'll say it here--the short access road is only suitable for high-clearance vehicles. It's quite narrow, but that's not the problem. There's a center ridge in the road that makes it difficult for sedans to deal with, along with some deep dips. My Prius made it, but suffered the indignities of several bottom scrapes. Of course, you could walk the 1.4 miles to the trail. The incredible basalt canyon wall makes it worthwhile--unique and bizarre rock formations created when a volcano erupted underneath a glacier.
