We kept a vigilant eye out for the wasp nests! We didn't see the nest that is reported to be in the trail around .42 miles, though we did see a concentration of wasps (compared to other sections of the trail) roughly around that mileage and moved quickly along. We did see the nest previously described as at the base of a tree past the lakes. Past the there are some rocks/sticks, previously put in place, marking the location which was handy for remembering where it is on the way back. An Alltrails screenshot shows it at about 1.16 miles.
Wasps aside, what a beautiful hike! And we saw salamanders in the larger of the lakes! I have only hiked Excelsior Pass from the HWY 542 side, so this was an absolute treat. While the 542 route is handy for lung busting and thigh burning, the Damfino Lakes route is handy for appreciating nature and enjoying the hike.
