On Tuesday, my buddy and I met up early in the morning to hit two hikes off the Mountain Loop Highway: Lake 22 and Heather Lake for a total of 12 miles (including the loop around Lake 22) and about 2,400’ of gain.
The morning fog kept the peaks at Lake 22 veiled in secrecy, but it was still very pretty and peaceful. We were just the second car in the trailhead parking lot so it wasn’t until the hike out that we started seeing how busy this trail can be. It pays to start nice and early! We started hiking at 7am.
After a short drive and quick lunch in the car, we started hike #2 up to Heather Lake. This one is the less popular little brother to Lake 22 and the trail itself is a lot rougher—very rocky and rooty. But! The lake itself and surrounding peaks are gorgeous and worth the trek, especially you find the Lake 22 parking lot full.
It was a great day of hiking!
