Not much to add that everyone hasn't said. When you get to where the trail splits around the lake, look up for your first good look at Mt. Pilchuck. The lake is stunning and a great first summer hike for the kids.
As mentioned before, the last half mile is very rocky and full of roots, hiking poles are a good choice if you have any knee, foot or ankle issues.
If you plan on camping, there are about 4 or 5 campsites. I didn't find the pit toilet but I must have passed it without noticing.
Please, if you have a dog, don't leave your poop bag, I saw several, and no one else is going to pack it out. Super gross!
