South Coast Wilderness Trail - Toleak Point — Saturday, May. 13, 2023

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast
The nights get dark here

I chose an out-and-back to Toleak Point from Third Beach as my first overnight in several decades. It proved to be a good, but challenging, hike that made me question my decision to lug out so much camera gear.

Unlike many recent reports, the trail was almost entirely dry and easy footing was found. The only area where there was mud was going down to Scott's Cove, but there was a crew working to build new steps in this section, so you may find it easygoing once they're done. I found the rope/ladder climbs to be fairly reasonable going up, but quite nervewracking coming down. Going slow and maintaining 3 points of contact help with that, but it's still tough with a heavy pack. The worst one is probably the one that goes down the south side of Scott's Bluff, mostly because of the large, loose rocks.

Water is easily found, but shade can be a rare sight. It got hawt.

The campsite at Toleak Point is a dream. I counted at least three bald eagles, who would frequently swoop down to hunt.

The sunset seemed to go on forever and once darkness fell, the views into deep space went on forever, too.
