Beautiful day for a hike on this great trail. Went up the Woody Trail road grade then onto Greg Ball Trail where I met and interrupted a WTA work crew replacing a creek crossing. As I approached they started yelling “hiker” to alert each other to safely stow tools and provide safe transit. They were all very nice in letting me pass by! They were just adding the first foot tread as I arrived having already done the frame and base work - important fact in a moment…
The Greg Ball Trail is in really good shape with only a couple short muddy sections and one small tree to duck under.
At the end of the GBT, one pops out onto the access road for a short walk to the Wallace Lake road which is an active work area, but signed for everyone’s awareness. This was my first time to the lake after many trips up and down to the Falls along the trails in the area. The lake is quite nice with few access points but good views of the surrounding hills and forest. I went all the way to the Pebble Beach access at the end of the lake to enjoy the sun for a while then headed back.
Once back at the WTA work site they were finishing the foot treads and invited me to be the official first hiker to cross! They apologized for not having a ribbon for a cutting ceremony but I was glad to jog across with arms raised and high fives like a celebrity nonetheless! Thank you all for the work - it is appreciated more than you know! They even took time out to chat and explain what they were doing and how crews are selected and led.
Saw about 2 dozen hikers in 11 miles and 3 1/2 hours of trail time
