Wiley Slough - Fir Island, Skagit Wildlife Area — Wednesday, Mar. 15, 2023

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Heron

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and contractors are raising and widening the dikes on the Skagit Wildlife Headquarters near Wiley Slough and upgrading the boat launch and parking lot. The area will be closed to public access from March 20 through November 3rd. We walked the area on this beautiful day to see it once more before the closure. Green-winged teal were the most prevalent duck species seen. Herons, mallards, a pair of pintail ducks, a common merganser,  a few tree swallows, a few shorebirds and a downy woodpecker excavating a nest were some of the other birds seen. The eagle pair was seen in a tree near their nest.
