A great little adventure. We were happy to do this hike in the fall when it wasn’t quite as hot. We started out at noon and it was a pleasant 75 - 80 with a small breeze. Perfect! We were mostly exposed to the terrific view that is the Columbia Gorge. Every step includes panoramic views.
The ascent is not hard, but is rocky and there were a couple of spots where I needed to use my hands to climb up. These were near the cave and the dry waterfall/creek. As a senior citizen this was challenging but fun. The descent down on CO3 was more difficult since it was mostly vertical and covered with loose rock and gravel. It made the trail slippery for me.
One complaint I have is for all the inconsistent signage. The forest service has trail guides with their numbers (eg 4426, 4428, etc.), the county has their numbering system (CO2, CO5, etc), and the hiking descriptions by WTA were accurate, but sometimes used the descriptive name (old ranch road, Atwood Road, etc.) which didn’t always cross reference either of the other two numbering systems. We were able to cross reference all three resources plus Google maps to make sure we were on the right track. Also pretty decent mobile coverage throughout the entire trip.
