The Mountain was not out for us this day, but hiking in the fog has its own beauty. As you make your way through the major viewpoints early in the trail (in both directions), the crowds thin a bit, but I still can't believe how busy the park has been lately. SO many people just walking off trail and putting out a picnic blanket, smoking, bringing dogs, ignoring signs trying to protect the fragile meadows. Sigh. The trail is well worn and easy to follow, just keep an eye out for signs to stay on track as many other trails branch off from Skyline. Definitely bring bug spray, they can really swarm when you stop moving, and plenty of water as the elevation gain heats things up. The wildflowers are just about spent, but there are still aster, pearly everlastings, daisies, and the occasional paintbrush brightening the trail.
