Trail Head Break-In

Trail Head Break-Ins!

We took our kids and dog out for a quick overnight. We went during the week and left nothing but a kid's backpack in our car. They broke the back window and only took the backpack (nothing in it but a change of clothes). It didn't even look like they rifled through the rest of the car. Another car that had overnighted was also broken into the same night as ours. We reported the break-in.

The hike itself was really nice! There is a tree you have to duck under about 3/4 of the way to Barclay Lake. The trail is actually a pretty interesting one with some views, some uphill and some downhill, and even a bridge to cross! We found a campsite easily arriving at about 2 pm (on a Thursday). The lake was not too cold to swim in either! After the last day hikers left we thought we might even have the whole lake to ourselves! We did not-the lake is too popular for that!

My kids loved swimming in the lake, hanging out on the shore, climbing on the rocks at the end of the lake, and the fact that there is a vault toilet! There are some good trees to hammock from as well with a great view of the lake.

All in all, we had a great time and I can see why this is a first backpack trip for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. However, the trailhead break-in does make me hesitate to recommend it to the troops in my service unit.

The vault toilet!
Warm enough to swim!
The lake is definitely low but still pretty!

I'm sorry you experienced this while hiking. We're gathering data about known trailhead crime, so would you please fill out a Trailhead Crime Report? I've added the link below, which also explains more about what we're doing and has links to a crime map and a spreadsheet of the data we've already collected.

Thanks for filling out the Trailhead Crime Report form. BTW, the Barclay Lake Trailhead is in King County, not Snohomish County, so they will probably ask you to re-report with KCSO. If they do ask you to report it to the KCSO, here's a link to report it online: https://secure.coplogic.com/dors/startreport/300002374/300004396

So weird. We called the King County Sheriff first but they said the trailhead was NOT in their jurisdiction but that Baring IS so they directed us to Snohomish County Sheriff where we were able to file a report. Well, it's filed somewhere at least!

After looking into this some more, it appears I was mistaken. It is close to the county line, but inside of Snohomish County. It is weird that I found records in the KCSO dataset which seem to match the address for the trailhead; I now need to figure out which trailhead those records actually belong to.

My sympathies. When they say "leave nothing on view, they mean NOTHING on view". Had a window broken to steal a diaper bag, many decades ago.(Alas, no poopy diapers within). Leave no change visible. Maybe open the glove box. Take the registration and insurance. It's a hassle, but less than the alternatives.
