While spending a few days out at the ocean, we got in a beach hike from Damon Point. Parking is along the road with a sanican at the trailhead. You walk a short distance on an old, paved road, then down onto the beach with soft sand. The old DNR road once went out to a campground on Protection Island but got wash away many years ago. To get to the beach on Protection Island we had to do a little rock scrambling, then it was all sand to the south end of the island. Along the way we saw several flocks of brown pelicans, some driving under water to get a fish. The tide was coming in, so there were some nice waves to see and hear. Part way down the shoreline we found a good washed-up log for a lunch time bench. The temp was only 64F with a nice cool sea breeze blowing.
After lunch we hiked to the far end south end of the island. At the end were many gulls sitting in the sand or lined up together on beached logs. There were a few other people at the south end looking for agates on the beach. We then hiked back to the trailhead as the tide was coming in. Made for a nice beach hike with no cars driving on the sand. Since the last time we were here, the remains of the old, wrecked ship have been removed. This ship was once used as a floating hotel in Seattle during the 1962 World's Fair.
Note: The WTA has the Damon Point hike listed as in the "Long Beach" area. It is located at Ocean Shores, way north of Long Beach.
