On our way up we passed a hiker who described this hike as "relentless" - and that's a pretty good word for it. That being said, it's a very special destination and worth it for the gorgeous views (and we only got partial views due to some clouds).
We got to the trailhead a little before 11 am on a Saturday, and to our surprise the lot was only 3/4 full. The trail wasn't very busy (because of the morning cloudy weather perhaps?) and the bugs weren't bad. I'd bring bug spray for the top, but I walked away with only one mosquito bite which isn't bad for a summer hike.
The first half of the hike is pretty brutal - I counted 54 switchbacks between the parking lot and start of the meadow section. It took us about 3.25 hours up, and 2.25 hours down. Bring lots of water, we each finished our camelbaks. Wildflowers are also blooming and look beautiful. I'd say in two more weeks there will be lots of ripe thimble berries and blue berries.
