Yesterday, I got up early and headed up to Huntoon Point. I couldn't force myself to wake up in time for sunrise, but made it in time for some beautiful morning light.
The road is open all the way to Heather Meadows visitor center, where I parked. Passing the gate and heading up the road I expected to encounter snow at some point, but the road is 100% clear all the way to the Artist Point parking area. There were 2 snow removal vehicles working, which I made sure to give a wide berth on my way through. After the parking lot it is snow anywhere you want to go, so be prepared for that. The snow is probably still 15 feet deep.
I walked to Huntoon Point across the snow fields, and didn't need anything except my boots. I had snow shoes with me, but never got them out. Maybe if it had been warmer, later in the day, and the snow was slushy they might have been helpful.
The total distance from Heather Meadows to Huntoon and back was about 5.6 miles, mostly road walking.
