This trip checked every box today: perfect weather, breathtaking mountain scenery, good workout, larches! There are many potholes on the road, but they were avoidable in my little hatchback. The trail is snowy, but melted quite a bit by the trip down. I did not need spikes, but boots are a good idea. I stopped at the gorgeous pass after a tall guy told me there was snow to his hips hiking down to the lake. The larches are wonderful at the pass, so it really is a great hike just the 6 mile RT to there. If you are in search of larches, I would go in the next few days, as we have a weather window, and they are just past peak now.
