Hoh River Trail to Five Mile Island — Saturday, Sep. 7, 2019

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast

A mellow, mostly level hike through the rain forest to a backcountry campsite. I hiked this late in the day on an early autumn weekend, leaving about 3:30pm and getting back to the car just before sunset. You can hike fairly quickly in the outbound direction at this time of day, because the crowds are mostly inbound (I passed at least 45 people in the first 90 minutes). Five Mile Island itself is not especially scenic, but it's a handy place to sit down, grab a bite of whatever you brought in your backpack, and have some water before the long hike back to the trailhead. If I were to do this hike over again, I'd leave earlier and try to get all the way to the Olympus Guard Station and back in a day.
