Hiked to Oyster Dome from the Hwy 11 trailhead. There were only a few other cars parked along the roadway at 9:30 am. The trail is uphill for almost the entire 3.8 miles (and 2100 FT) to Oyster dome challenging your willingness to continue to the top. It is well worth the trip when the weather is good (on cloudy days, consider it a conditioning hike) for the views across the Salish Sea are amazing. Take your time and enjoy the hike. A rest/snack break at the bench overlook is a great idea and another at one of the creek crossings is a bonus. There were several other hikers and trail runners on the trail as well. There were a few dogs on the trail as well but the owners had them on lease and well controlled.
The trail was well marked and in good condition with a few muddy spots along the way. As for obstacles, there were three small trees across the trail but easy to step over. Due to the recent rains, there were also a few small run offs that were crossable on stones, preventing wet feet.
Once at the dome, the clouds/fog persisted. After waiting out a brief rain shower and a short nap, the sun appeared. Other hikers were present enjoying sandwiches, beverages and views. From Chuckanut Bay, across the San Juan islands, and over to Canada; the scene was laid out for the viewing pleasure. A squirrel and a chipmunk may attempt to acquire food but do not feed the wildlife. There is room at the top for several groups but do expect to share it with others, privacy is very rare on such a popular trail.
Bonus: on a good day with winds blowing in from the Strait, parasails can be seen floating overhead. They take off from the Samish overlook and land in a field off Hwy 11 near the bridge. Take a few moments to watch them glide.
