Plan was to hike at Naches Peak loop trail but there was too much snow so we decided to go to Sheep Lake instead. Trail mostly clear until you get up into the woods. Easy to lose the trail once in the woods , strongly recommend having a GPS with you until the snow melts. Got to the lake with relatively no problems, had to hunt for the trail a small amount. Coming down was more difficult, lost the trail due to snow & had to utilize the GPS to get back on trail. It’s easy to understand how people can get lost in Rainier when there is still snow on the ground and the trail is not obvious. Other than the snow, it was a beautiful day for a hike. The ice is melting on the lake, you can see a few small fish swimming but there were a few annoying flies were buzzing around our heads as we sat at the lake.

Thanks for this. I sometimes feel I am a big chicken on the snow thing. Your report puts it in perspective. I have done this hike in the summer & it seemed impossible to get lost/lose trail. But the snow makes it a whole other experience. Anyway do appreciate as I usually solo & will save this one for another month!
