Trip Report

Ancient Groves, Sol Duc Falls & Deer Lake — Saturday, May. 11, 2019

Olympic Peninsula > Northern Coast

Went out with some friends to the Sol Duc area of Olympic National Park, so picked a few hikes that were suitable for most people.

Ancient Groves is a fun little hike, just about half a mile that has some enormous trees and a cool view of the river. We saw a bald Eagle flying along the river looking for something to eat I assume.

Then we drove down to Sol Duc Falls and did that short hike to falls, it was pretty warm so the mist from the falls felt real nice. That area was not as crowded as I had expecting going in mid-day on a Saturday, but still a solid amount of people.

After crossing the bridge and taking the path to the right we took the 3 mile hike to Deer lake and then hiked around deer lake. The trail to Deer Lake is completely snow free. The trail around deer lake has snow in places, but is easy to cross. The trails past the lake through Little Divide to Mink Lake and further on through the 7 lakes basin are buried in snow still.

On the way down from Deer Lake I recommend Trekking poles as it can get kind of steep and is pretty rocky, but with some loose rocks, so watch your footing.

overall it is a pretty easy hike with the hike up to deer lake being moderately challenging, but we'll be waiting a bit longer to do the high divide/7 lakes basin which I will come back for.
