If you are looking for an easier trail in the area (and with even better scenery in my opinion) do Cape Flattery.
This trail is still very pretty once you get to the beach area, but it was mostly mud, some higher than ankle deep getting there (~2 miles to get to the beach). The steps leading down to the beach are also VERY steep and you will feel it going down, but especially coming back up (fyi- the ramp/steps to the beach were NOT muddy when we went at least, so that was good). Still, great scenery once you get there and a big wide beach to hike along after that if you so choose. Many rock formations and much to be seen along the beach. We did not make it to the Arches point however because navigating through ALL the mud took its toll. Just beware, lots of mud that probably won't dry up anytime soon!

We had planned to take our 10-year-old on his first backpacking trip here this weekend... now I’m a bit concerned about the eroded trail with his pack. I don’t expect it to be easy, but is it safely doable in your opinion? Thank you!!

It's definitely safe, just very muddy, but the muddy parts are flat. Just bring a pair of shoes to change into when you get back to the car and you'll be good to go.
