Mount Townsend — Monday, Apr. 8, 2019

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
PC: Geri G.

The day had started out auspiciously with a warm blue dome omnipresent right above in the forest canopy.

There was fresh snow on the road, covering the surface up to about 4”. We drove all the way up/down to the trailhead using an all-wheel drive with every traction assist functions activated. There were potholes that made the drive rather challenging but should one exercise caution then reaching the TH could be accomplished safely. Every other car parked a mile away which was honestly a really smart choice.

The trail was clearly well trodden over snow in the first mile, or mile and a half. It was comfortable; no chains required, but hiking sticks were a plus. 🤘

Once the trees cleared, so did the tracks. Weather was nice and our contingent proceeded to soldier on with assistance from Gaia. We cut steps straight up a snowfield for a half-ish hour when the clouds started shuffling in; we waited it out while having lunch on a rocky outcrop and realized the day was solidly socked-in. The summit was a mere 500’ climb but with the poor visibility mixed in, we decided to head down to town and get beers instead.

It was a great day nonetheless. This hike was always a cool and fun adventure in whatever conditions the day might bring.
