Trip Report

Mount Si — Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019

Snoqualmie Region > North Bend Area

Got up bright and early to conquer Mount Si to kick off the new year. Started hiking around 05:00 and got off to a good start. Took a wrong turn at the first Talus loop sign and it actually worked out really well. Knew both trails got to the summit and this way was certainly less traveled; think snow with a clear trail of tracks but not compact snow and ice like the main trail. Was able to make it to the rock field via the back route without use of spikes in about 2 hours and 30 minutes without an issue. Tried to summit the Haystack but found that 6-8 inches of powdered made it almost impossible, might have pushed it with spikes and a hiking partner but would not recommend unless you have the proper experience.  Had to do a tactical buttslide to get down. The main trail going down was slick. Pay attention to foot placement and stick to the edges if you don't have spikes. Overall, great day for a hike; glad it worked out the way it did. Stay safe people.
