Took our two tweens straight up to Rampart Ridge on a stunning fall day. Lots of whining from the younger, for good reason - this is no joke. Some dicey areas with very steep scrambles but we made it in one piece and didn't lose any kids.
Once we got to the top of the ridge, everyone was happy and the views were amazing. Saw a few people. Six cars at the TH. Stopped at the saddle overlooking rampart lakes to avoid coming back back uphill again - scrambled up to the rainier overlook. About 3.5 hours total and 4.5 steep miles. Saw grouse, woodpecker, pika, trout in a tiny pond. Lovely fall colors.
Take FR 136- gold Creek road toward Mount Margaret TH but turn left. It's rough, narrow, with overgrown vegetation, but obvious parking. Don't attempt in a Prius or a car that has a nice paint job.
Incredible way to get into the isolated back country!
