Trip Report

Deception Pass State Park - Headlands / Rosario Head / Lighthouse Point — Monday, Aug. 27, 2018

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area

It was a staggeringly beautiful morning as I hiked from Bowman Bay out to Lottie Bay and Lighthouse Point. August on south Fidalgo Island can sometimes bring thick fog. However, this day the view was clear enough to see out to the Deception Pass Bridge and to some of the outlying islands. Stunning views!

There is a little elevation gain at the start of this hike. However, the rest of it is pretty gradual. There were plenty of deliciously sweet Salal berries to eat. Early in the morning, I saw several Great Blue Heron, a family of River Otters, an Osprey, and an owl I didn't see long enough to identify. On my return hike, the tide had gone out and there were several tidepools to explore. No sea stars this time, sadly.

The only thing to note is that Lighthouse Point is covered with several "unofficial" trails that lead you through thick bramble. I've gotten off on the wrong trail twice on Lighthouse Point and was unsure where the real trail ended. Definitely worth bringing a map if you aren't looking to go bushwacking - or climb down and back up a really steep cliff!
